The Metaverse. It’s the talk of the town. More accurately, it’s the talk of the world. But what is the Metaverse? And is it relevant to your business? If you don’t know exactly how to put the Metaverse into words, know that you’re not alone, because there isn’t even a single, widely supported definition yet. What we do know is that it’s a virtual world that is still being developed. You could compare it to what was being said about the Internet 25 years ago. We knew roughly what it was and what it could do, but it was nothing like what it is today. The same goes for the Metaverse: there are plenty of possibilities, but it will be what we make of it. For now, there are tonnes of opportunities.

The Metaverse primarily looks to be an evolved version of today’s Internet. An evolution how? Mainly in terms of perception. We share a lot online and virtual meetings have become a universal part of everyday life. Our experiences on the Internet, however, are often rather one-dimensional and static. And that’s exactly what looks to be changing. Soon, you’ll be able to navigate an entirely virtual world and join in new experiences, just as in the real world. The Metaverse is what happens when you connect all those different virtual worlds. The thing is, that has not actually happened yet, but there are multiple three-dimensional worlds out there already in which you can have virtual experiences, such as Fortnite, Decentraland and Sandbox. Ariana Grande's high-profile performance is a successful example of such a unique experience in a virtual world.

Business events in the Metaverse

Even if you’re not called Ariana Grande, you can still create a 360-degree experience in a virtual world, using technologies such as Virtual and Augmented Reality. Last year, we organized a business event together with Top Employers Institute in a world that we designed ourselves. Using virtual helicopters, more than 13,000 visitors explored a custom-made - though carefully directed - Metaverse-like world. With their very own digital avatars, the event’s visitors decided what they wanted to do themselves and were given the opportunity to interact with each other and the speakers.

A whole new world

It bears repeating: the Metaverse is hot. Major investors have already recognised its value and the underlying technology is developing at breakneck speed, which means that the Metaverse is rapidly becoming more accessible. The thought alone gets our heart rate pumping. We believe that merging the physical and digital world will spawn a new event world in which we can enhance your audience’s experiences, emotions, sensations and memories. Exciting right?
